Are hemp and wood fiber insulation safe and approved materials?
Profib® Mat insulation has been assessed in compliance with the 2015 National Building Code (NBC) and the 2020 NBC by the Canadian Construction Materials Center (CCMC-14272). This evaluation by an independent body confirms that the product, as well as the quality control implemented by Nature fibres, meets the highest requirements for the building and, therefore, does not represent any risk for consumers’ safety, security and health.
Test results appear on the technical data sheets of the products.
Profib® Cell blown-in insulation is certified under the CAN/ULC S703 standard for cellulose fiber insulation for buildings by Underwriters Laboratories, an independent organization that issues safety certificates for many products.

Why use hemp and wood fiber as insulation?
Hemp fiber, like wood fiber and most other natural fibers, are highly effective insulating materials. The air contained in the fibers forms an excellent insulating layer.
In terms of the environment, our products capture more CO2 during their life cycle than they emit. They are a wise choice for the environment and for the health of building occupants.

Where can I find Profib® insulation?
What is the thermal resistance of Profib® materials?
How do you install Profib® insulation?
Flexible batt insulation is installed like any other insulation, filling the cavities between wood or steel framing. For detailed information on cutting tools and procedures, refer to the installation guide. Profib® Mat Installation Guide
Profib® Cell insulation is installed using the same tools and method as paper cellulose. It is recommended to hire a professional. For detailed information, refer to the installation guide. Profib® Cell Installation Guide
It is essential to protect the products from the elements during transport, storage and installation.
With Profib® products, it is recommended you use a moisture-regulating vapor barrier membrane whose permeability to water vapor varies according to the relative humidity. This will allow your natural fiber insulation to perform its role of controlling ambient humidity.
How do hemp fiber or wood fiber insulation materials control humidity inside the house?
All plant fiber insulation materials have hygroscopic powers, i.e. an ability to manage the humidity contained in the air. These materials can absorb up to 15% of their weight in moisture without losing their insulating properties. The phenomenon of capillarity allows plant fibers to transport moisture from more humid places to drier places.
This makes Profib® insulation products able to absorb humidity in humid weather and release it in drier weather, thus creating unparalleled interior comfort.
Is hemp insulation resistant to rodents and insects?
Hemp fibers are naturally repellent against rodents and xylophagous insects (mites, termites, and ants).
What is the cost difference between Profib® insulation, glass wool and stone wool?
The costs associated with Profib® products are comparable to the costs of stone wool insulation. However, the humidity control benefits improve indoor comfort while reducing the costs associated with heating and cooling, not to mention the environmental and health benefits.
Do Profib® insulations increase the risk of fire spreading?
All Profib® insulation products are treated with effective flame retardants that slow the spread of flames in the event of a fire. In addition, the advantage of Profib® products is that they develop little smoke and that heat-related fumes are not toxic.
Is it possible to soundproof a room with Profib® products?
Certainly! We have designed the Nosound® range specifically to meet soundproofing needs, but all Profib® insulations show excellent performance in sound absorption. Whether for exterior walls, interior divisions or rooms dedicated to acoustics, Profib® insulation is an excellent choice.
Why use natural fiber insulation instead of mineral wool?
- To enjoy effective insulation all year round
The colder it is, the more effective Profib® insulation is since the R-value of our products increases when the temperature drops. On hot days, the thermal phase shift allows the wall to slow down the passage of hot air inside the building.
- To control building humidity
Natural fiberinsulation absorbs moisture in wet weather and releases it in drier weather.
- To help reduce greenhouse gases (GHG)
Profib® insulation is made from renewable materials. They offer a sustainable solution that reduces a building’s carbon footprint.
- To benefit from a healthy and peaceful environment
Profib® insulation products are natural and contribute significantly to reduce environmental noise for better health and comfort for users
Is it possible to use hemp or wood fibers to insulate the basement?
Currently, we do not have enough statistical data and certified tests to recommend installing hemp insulation in the basement. It is not recommended to install Profib® products in direct contact with concrete.
